Where is Vipingo Ridge and how do I get there from Mombasa?
Vipingo Ridge is a 2,500-acre gated estate at Vipingo in Kilifi County, on Kenya's Indian Ocean coast, roughly 40 minutes north of Mombasa. From Moi International Airport (MBA) the drive is about 35–45 minutes on the Mombasa–Malindi highway, and the gate is on the ocean side of the road. Private and charter aircraft can land on the estate's own airstrip instead. Coral Retreat arranges the transfer and registers your names with estate security before you travel.
Is there a luxury villa to rent on Vipingo Ridge?
Yes. Coral Retreat is a privately owned, recently refurbished four-bedroom villa inside the Vipingo Ridge estate, let exclusively to one party at a time. It sleeps a maximum of eight guests across five beds with three and a half bathrooms, and has a private pool, sun terrace and panoramic Indian Ocean views. A housekeeper, house manager and gardener are included in the rate.
Can I play golf at Vipingo Ridge as a villa guest?
Yes — villa guests can play the PGA Baobab Course, but golf is booked directly with Vipingo Ridge and is not included in the villa rate. Tee times, buggies, caddies and club hire are arranged through the estate's pro shop, and we send you the contacts so it is all confirmed before you fly. The driving range and PGA Academy are available on the same basis.
Is Vipingo Ridge good for a golf holiday?
It is one of the few places in East Africa built around championship golf. The Baobab Course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout and the only PGA-branded course in Africa, with a driving range, a PGA Academy led by PGA Professional David Marsh, and a clubhouse and 19th hole. Free-roaming giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and eland graze the fairways. November to March is hot, dry and bright — the season most visiting golfers choose.
How many people can stay at Coral Retreat?
A strict maximum of eight guests. There are four bedrooms and five beds: bedroom one has a king bed, bedroom two has two singles, and bedrooms three and four have king beds. Three and a half bathrooms serve the house, and the villa is only ever let to a single party.
Is the villa staffed and can we hire a chef?
The villa is fully staffed, and a private chef can be arranged on request. A housekeeper, house manager and gardener are included in the rate; the housekeeper is also happy to cook if you would rather keep things simple. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped — electric oven, air fryer, microwave, fridge-freezers and a dedicated beer fridge — and the barbecue is lit most evenings.
Does the villa have wifi good enough for remote work?
Yes — Starlink delivers up to 180mbps throughout the house. That is fast enough for video calls, large uploads and streaming, so a working week here is genuinely workable. Because the villa runs on solar power, the connection stays up during the mains outages that are common on the Kenyan coast.
Is Vipingo Ridge safe and secure?
The estate is gated with 24/7 manned security across its 2,500 acres, and guest names are pre-registered so arrival is quick. Roads inside are quiet and patrolled, there is an on-estate medical facility, and a private airstrip on site. The villa itself is a private, exclusive-use house within that perimeter.
What wildlife will we see on the estate?
Vipingo Ridge is a free-roaming wildlife sanctuary, so giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and eland are seen most days, often on or beside the golf fairways. Bushbuck, dik-dik, mongoose and a long list of coastal birds live in the indigenous forest. Speed limits are strictly observed on the estate because the animals have right of way.
When is the best time of year to visit the Kenyan coast?
November to March is the best window: hot, dry, bright and ideal for golf and the reef. June to October is cooler and breezier but still comfortable, while April and May bring the heaviest rain. Sea temperatures stay warm year-round, so swimming and snorkelling are never off the table.
Is the villa suitable for young children?
No — we do not recommend Coral Retreat for toddlers or young children. The pool is unfenced and there are no stair gates, and we would rather say so plainly than have you worry on holiday. Older children and teenagers are very welcome, and there is a kids' club on the estate.
